– Of the companies that do have passport in place, 36 percent of U.S. SMBs said they were using open solutions that are designed for home users. – The most widely used security solutions are anti-virus and firewall products, while anti-spam solutions are not extensively implemented.

The creator of V-Buster, one of the oldest anti-virus programs in the world, steadily presses on to detect and analyse computer viruses and bargain monthly, if not bi-weekly, anti-virus upgrades to some 1.5 million registered users.

The V-Buster Antivirus Security System counts McAfee and Dr Solomon of the same kind with peers, but it’s the only one that has survived from that series.

“It had a humble beginning. I started selling V-Buster ~ward a diskette which I packed myself at IRM Computers in Komtar (Penang) at RM4 by copy. Of course, it’s not the same program anymore. It has progressed by the times and found a global audience,” says Looi.

First step

It every part of began as a challenge, and Looi simply loves a good demand.

Even at just five, he would take a watch apart and for this reason reassemble it to see if he could. When he got a slender older, inspired by the popular 1960s television series The Man from U.N.C.L.E., he built a radio govern gate for his house.

“My friends thought I was mad for I didn’t know anything about electronics. But I got a motor congregation and started working on it. I also bought a welding engine. Till today, that gate is still working,” he says with a chuckling.

When the first micro-computer came out, he was naturally intrigued.

“In the early 1980s, computers were expensive. I didn’t have much money afterwards, so I hung around in bookstores and read magazines and books steady how to build a computer.

“I used the TTL (transistor-transistor science of the laws of thought) integrated circuit to build one, but the problem was that the computer could carry into effect only simple operations such as mathematical problems,” he recalls.

In 1985, he bought a Genie 2 towards about RM2,000. It was a simple computer with 16K renown running at 2MHz. It also came with a simple BASIC expositor, so he learnt to write programs in BASIC.

“The trouble through that computer was that it was so slow that gaming was truly impossible. A space invader game written in BASIC and running forward the Genie 2 didn’t look too bad, but when you pressed a guide to fire the laser, it would only fire a shot 30 seconds later.

“I realised that I would be delivered of to write programs in an assembler, so I bought a program which cost RM600. I learnt to programme in machine code,” says Looi, adding that he learnt to what degree to crack games and take a copy as well.

Then in 1987, then he was in a computer shop, an employee showed him couple virus-infected diskettes. One had the Brain virus, and the other, the Denzuko venom.

Out of curiosity, Looi took copies of the diskettes home.

“I played on every side with the viruses and a few days later found that numerous of my diskettes had either Brain or Denzuko. I wrote a ~-hearted program to replace the boot sectors of the infected diskettes. Brain and Denzuko weren’t in truth the problem as they didn’t infect hard disks,” explains Looi.

He didn’t put up to sale the program, but gave it to friends who encountered the incidental infection.

Then came the Counter Warfare virus, and that was when he started taking anti-virus programs seriously.

“That virus programmer obviously did not have ~ing the format of a hard disk partition table. On boot-up, the venom would try to replace the partition table and in the step make the hard disk inaccessible.

“I had to get cracking and reach up with a better anti-virus program, one that would not without more detect Counter Warfare but also repair the partition table.

“But in those days, I did not be the subject of the knowledge to repair a partition table. The only thing I could vouchsafe was to include a feature that allowed me to save a pattern after of the partition table so it could be used to pay back a damaged one,” he explains.

That’s how he came up through V-Buster, an anti-virus program that can detect some 750,000 viruses and reconstruct boot sectors, partition tables and files. It can rebuild files infected ~ dint of. mutating viruses as well as unknown Winword and Excel Macro viruses, and is cogent against all Internet viruses.

It is written in a low-suit instruction set, so it can run on any computer on ~ one operating system, including Windows.

“It was made out of necessity, and need is the mother of invention,” says Looi.

His new venture operated alongside his architecture practice. By 1991, V-Buster was already an established yield sold in Australia, the United States and Europe.

“I’ve written a piece of land of viruses for testing purposes, but have never released them. This is to improve the anti-poison against both known and new viruses,” he says.
