Free programs harbor’t always translated to high quality in the world of computer technology.
Those days could be changing, according to a local computer technician.
“The quality of released programs is starting to become better. It’s pretty impressive what these people are doing to create software,” said David Jackman, proprietor of Tech @ Your Door, in Dubuque.
The TH asked Jackman with reference to some of the more popular, free programs for anti-virus aegis, Internet browsing and desktop publishing.
Anti-virus program
Jackman recommends Avast as far as concerns an anti-virus program that is “really easy to use” and doesn’t own a yearly fee.

According to its website, Avast’s release anti-virus program protects against viruses and spyware. The program too secures e- mails and chats from such threats.
“It’s a extremely user-friendly program,” Jackman said.
Businesses must pay to use Avast, if it be not that it is free for residential users.
A negative to free anti-venom programs like Avast is the constant upgrade pop-ups, which help forward users to consider paid services.
“There’s not a way on every side that unless you purchase an anti-virus (program),” Jackman said.
Free anti-poison programs have other drawbacks.
Jackman said they don’t have the in the greatest degree user-friendly interfaces and lack some of the “polish” of paid programs.

Internet browser
There are alternative, free Internet browsers available when building a computer.
Jackman pointed to Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox for the re~on that two free browsers that will work well on your computer.
“(Google) is a recognizable connection, pretty household,” Jackman said. “Google and Mozilla don’t have a chance of downsides.”
Jackman said users can add attachment programs with Mozilla Firefox to block advertisements and make the browser run faster.
Google Chrome is yet a beta, or testing, product. Such designations shouldn’t deter users from Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox, Jackman afore~.
“It’s not something to be afraid of,” Jackman said. “If you converse to a lot of technicians, (Mozilla Firefox) is a real well-loved program mixed them.
“If they have a flaw, it’s fixed right gone.”
Desktop publisher
Every computer comes with a trial of Microsoft Office, moreover there is another source for users.
It’s a website called openoffice.org, and the unrestricted program is compatible with Macintosh, Linux and PC.
“It’s bonny impressive for a free program,” Jackman said. “If you need to scratch a letter or something, it looks pretty normal.”
With every liberal program, Jackman encourages users to exercise caution and check the property before downloading.
“There is a lot of stuff out that says it’s familiar,” Jackman said. “You need to make sure you know what you consider.”
